Srinagar: Three Army personnel and two Jammu and Kashmir policemen were martyred in an ongoing encounter in Kupwara’s Halmatpora in which five terrorists have been killed till reports last came in.

In this ongoing encounter that started on Tuesday afternoon, two cops have also sustained injuries, said a police official.

The police official said that four unidentified terrorists were killed in the operation last night in a forest area in the district. The body of another terrorist was recovered on Wednesday evening, taking the number of terrorists neutralised in the encounter to five, said the police official.

He said that a huge cache of arms and ammunition and other incriminating materials, including AK 47 rifles and grenades, were recovered from the encounter site.

The encounter was triggered when terrorists fired at a joint party of the Army and Special Operations Group (SOG) of J&K Police, said defence spokesman (Srinagar) Col Rajesh Kalia.

He said that the operation was aided by the Army’s Para Commandos.

A police officer said that a joint team of the Army’s 41 Rashtriya Rifles and SOG launched the operation following inputs about the movement of seven foreign terrorists in the area. “At least four to five terrorists are still holed up in the area with fire exchange on,” said the police official.
