Jammu: Sixteen Amarnath pilgrims were killed and 20 others injured on Sunday when a bus carrying them plunged into a gorge near Banihal town in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district.

According to a police official, the bus carrying the pilgrims from Jammu to Srinagar suffered a tyre burst, leading to the vehicle going out of control of the driver at around 2 pm in Nachnala and subsequently rolled into a gorge.

He said that the mishap led to the killing of 16 pilgrims and injury to 20 others.

Immediately after the incident, the police and the army personnel rushed to the spot and were carrying out rescue operation.
“Even IAF choppers have been pressed into service to airlift the injured pilgrims to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Jammu,” said the police official.
